• Tips for Storing your Summer Gear

As the season draws to a close, it’s time to find a place for all your summer gear. Fun in the sun requires quite a bit of equipment and if you’re like most of us, when the summer ends you may not be quite sure how and where to stow it all. Sports equipment, camping gear, and water toys seem to multiply in the summer, but they can all be safely stored in your garage.

Of course, the question is not just where to put it all, but also how to keep it safe for next year. Nothing ruins a summer outing faster than finding out your gear has degraded while it was stored. Follow a few best practices for storing summer things, and it will all be fresh and ready the next time you take it out.

    • When packing away beach or pool equipment, make sure it’s clean and dry. Knock off any loose sand, hose off whatever you can’t get off otherwise, and allow everything to dry completely before you store it. You can pack your water toys and gear into closets, cupboards, bins, or anywhere else you find convenient, but it’s a good idea to pack some DampRid in with these items, to ensure there’s no mold or mildew when you take them out next year.

    • Hang your canoes, surfboards, and bikes from the ceiling or on wall racks. Making the most of vertical space is a great idea when you’re looking for somewhere to store these bulky items. Before you put them away for the season, make sure to give them a good cleaning and oil anything that has wheels or moving parts. It’s also smart to use the appropriate protectant on metal, rubber and plastic items before you store.

    • Clean your camping gear thoroughly before putting it away.

      • Set up the tent in the garage and vacuum it. Then wipe it down with soap and water and allow it to dry completely

      • Clean your sleeping bag and hang it to let it air out between uses. It’s better to store sleeping bags hanging in a closet than rolled and stuffed into a plastic or nylon bag.

      • Vacuum and wipe backpacks. You don’t want to leave any crumbs or debris in your bags that might attract unwanted attention from bugs or rodents.

      • Remove batteries from flashlights and other electronic gear before storing. At best, storing things with the batteries still inside will deplete the batteries. At worst, it can become a fire hazard.

Keeping your gear safe also means having a garage that’s secure. Is it time to update your garage door, to make sure you have the security you need? • Can a Garage be Unique?

Garages are functional spaces and, for the most part, they’re pretty similar. They can be attached to the house or detached, and typically they have room for storage and one or more cars. Most garages have a concrete floor and a sturdy door that’s usually made of steel, aluminum, wood, copper, glass, or vinyl. So what would make a garage unique?

    • Some garages are unique because they’re made to house unique items. Maybe the garage is unique because it holds a charging port, in order to house an electric car. A garage might be made of glass or some other translucent material, to show off its contents: maybe it holds a beautiful sports car. Some people build luxury garages to house high-end cars while also providing hang-out space for car enthusiasts to gather.

    • Other garages are created especially to fit with their surroundings, rather than standing out as unique spaces. Often, beautiful estates will have garages that are made of the same materials as the house and built in a way that brings symmetry to the home’s overall look. As a rule of thumb, garages should match the architectural style of the home. High-end homes deserve custom garage doors, like carriage house doors or specialty doors.

    • Sometimes, garages are designed to make the most of natural resources. A garden on the roof of the garage is one example of a way to utilize otherwise wasted space in a beneficial way. While a garden produces natural resources, other garages respect nature in the way they’re constructed. Garages can be made of sustainable local materials, or they can be made from recycled or reclaimed materials. Garage roofs can also be designed in such a way that they divert rainwater into a rain barrel, which is another way to make wise use of natural resources.

    • High-tech garages are a high-end solution. Today’s garage doors come with many high-tech options, like Wi-Fi garage door openers that work with your smartphone. Ceiling lifts provide a convenient storage option, and solar panels mounted on top of a garage can provide energy to the whole home. Some people build underground home garages, often using hydraulic lifts to optimize available space and store cars in a space that’s uniquely integrated into the home. For people with many cars, a multilevel garage may be the best solution and is another configuration in which hydraulic lifts can be used for convenient storage.

  • Three Easy Ways to Keep Your Garage Cool During the Summer

If you live in New Jersey you know how hot it can get during the dog days of summer. It’s not difficult to cool the inside of your home to give you a break from the weather, but one area that often gets overlooked is your garage. Whether you mainly use your garage to park your vehicles or you use it as a workshop or for any types of hobbies, being in the garage during the summertime can be quite uncomfortable.

Most of the time your home’s air conditioner does not cool down the garage. Thankfully there are some other ways to cool down your garage space to make it more comfortable. The following tips can help you keep your garage cool during summer.

    • Ventilation – Even on a hot day it’s better to open up the doors and windows so your garage can have fresh air circulating inside it. You can also have a ventilation system installed. This may cost a bit more, but it’s worth it if you plan on spending lots of time in your garage.

    • Fans – A ceiling fan can be installed in your garage if it has enough clearance, meaning it’s at least eight feet tall. If you prefer, you can go with an oscillating household fan. You can also use a pedestal, box, or high-powered shop fan.

    • Vehicles – You might not even realize it, but parking your vehicles in your garage can cause the space to heat up. Your car is going to be warm when you park it and that heat will get trapped inside your garage. Vehicles also take up a lot of space making it more difficult for the air to circulate.

Guardian Garage Door Services can help you keep your garage cool during the summer using products like air screens to allow the air in while keeping bugs and insects out. Contact us today for more information.

  • How to Keep Your Garage Door Secure While You’re On Vacation

If you’re planning a summer vacation, you obviously want to make sure your home is safe and secure. While many homeowners focus on their home’s doors and windows, some don’t pay much thought to securing their garage door. You would hate to make sure everything in your home was secure only to back out of the garage and simply close the door without any additional security measures.

If you have a newer garage door opener it may already have a vacation lock feature which would be located on the wall console. This feature disables the digital keyless entry pad and handheld radio controls. You’ll be able to close the door only once using a remote control and then the door will be disabled. If your system is not equipped with a vacation lock you can simply unplug the system from the electrical outlet so it will not be able to operate without power.

If your garage door has smartphone capability you will be able to monitor the position of the door from anywhere you are located. This way you can grant permission to anyone needing to enter and be sure your door is closed properly. If you have a security camera attached to your garage you have an even higher level of peace of mind. Motion lights are also a good deterrent to any unscrupulous individuals or would-be thieves.

If you prefer some simpler, “old school” techniques, you can use a manual lock on your garage door. Pairing this method with unplugging the garage door opener is a good way to keep your garage and home secure. • Why Did My Garage Door Come Off Its Tracks?

As with many things in your home, you probably don’t pay too much attention to your garage door unless it’s not functioning properly. If your garage door stops opening and closing as it typically does or it comes crashing down, chances are that it’s come off its tracks. There are a variety of reasons why garage doors come off their tracks and the issues could be fixed quite easily by a professional.

    • Bent Door – This often happens when a driver runs into their garage door by pulling into the garage or backing out from it. Bent doors can be caused by other factors, but it commonly causes a garage door to come off the track.

    • Weak Tracks – Horizontal tracks can bend easily when they can’t handle the weight of the garage door, which is as heavy as 400 pounds. If you have a heavy garage door you need stronger tracks because if they are too weak the door will come off track.

    • Worn Out Rollers – There are several rollers that help glide a garage door along its tracks and helps it open and cloth smoothly. Even one or two rollers being worn out can lead to the door falling off its track.

    • Lift Cables – Lift cables are found on both sides of the garage door. The cable will break or come loose if the door loses alignment.

    • Loose Hardware – There are lots of moving parts connected to a garage door and over time they can wear down or come loose. Having every fastener on your garage door inspected and tightened is a good way to prevent this from causing problems.

As you now know, there are plenty of reasons a garage door can come off its tracks. Once it does, stop trying to use it right away and schedule an appointment with Guardian Garage.

  • Why Spring Is the Best Time to Replace Your Garage Door

You may find yourself spending a good amount of time in your garage doing some spring cleaning this year. Whether or not the contents of your garage need to be organized or not, chances are you could benefit from a new garage door. Spring is considered to be the best season for a garage door replacement, so read on to learn more.

The extreme winter weather doesn’t do any favors for the spring system of your garage door. Even if you don’t opt for a new garage door, you’ll still want to give it a tune-up at the very least. Counterbalancing garage doors is commonly performed in spring as the weather starts to warm up. Springs tend to break in half after harsh, humid winters.

Many garage door replacement companies in Philadelphia offer their best prices of the year during spring. Since spring is sandwiched in between seasons of cold and hot temperatures, it’s the perfect time to make sure your garage door is in proper working order.

Your garage door should be considered an important entry point to your home just like your front door. You wouldn’t allow your front door to not lock properly or allow in hot and cold air from outside, so you shouldn’t risk your family’s safety or decrease your home’s energy efficiency with a garage door that needs to be repaired or replaced.

In addition to opening your home up to thieves, a garage door that isn’t working properly is a serious safety hazard for you and your family. Your garage door could collapse if it isn’t being properly supported, and you may no longer be able to open or close it at all.

Guardian Garage Doors offers high-quality residential and commercial garage doors including carriage house doors, traditional doors, and specialty doors. Give us a call today at 609-693-8040 to learn more.

  • Garage Door Springs: What You Need To Know

Your garage door has a lot of moving parts to keep it working properly. With most garage doors weighing well over 100 pounds, it should come as no surprise that a garage door’s springs work hard and sometimes need to be replaced. While some people attempt to replace garage door springs themselves, this can be very dangerous and quite costly if you are not well trained.

Garage door springs are one of the most important elements of any garage door. They counteract the heavy weight of the door and keep the door balanced. The two types of garage door springs are torsion springs and extension springs. Torsion springs are more expensive but last longer.

It’s recommended that you don’t wait until your garage door breaks to replace its springs. You can do a couple of tests to find out what condition the springs are in and whether or not they should be replaced. First, move your garage door into the open position. Pull the lift release cord with a red handle which puts it into manual mode if the power goes out. The garage door should not move or only have a subtle movement. If the springs aren’t strong enough, the door may sink back into the vertical tracks.

The next test you can perform to see if your garage door’s springs need to be replaced starts by pulling the door to the halfway open position. If you have trouble moving the door by hand you have an issue. You also have a problem if your door starts to sink. In either case, your springs need to be replaced.

Even if you suspect that your garage door springs need to be replaced, call a professional. It’s not worth risking it by trying to do it yourself as the heavy garage door could regrettably fall and injure you severely. • Three Easy Garage Maintenance Tips

You know how important it is to have regular maintenance done on your vehicle, but do you treat your garage door the same way? Many of us tend to take our garage doors for granted, but with plenty of moving parts they need maintenance or they’ll break down over time.

You should leave any major garage door repairs to the professionals, but there are some things you can do on your own to keep your door working properly and help prevent it from needing to be repaired or replaced too soon.

A malfunctioning garage door can not only be annoying or costly, it can also be a significant safety issue, especially if you have children. Here are a few things you can do to help maintain your garage door:

    1. Pay Attention – When garage doors start making noises that means that something is likely wrong. If you catch them at the early stages the problem might not be too bad, but if you ignore it and let it go on too long it could lead to larger issues.

    2. Lubricate – Use WD-40 or another penetrating solvent to lubricate your garage door’s rollers, roller tracks, hinges, and latches. For extension-spring openers lubricate the pulleys and for torsion-spring openers lubricate the bearings. Next, you’ll want to wipe everything clean and then apply a light oil like a 3-in-1 lubricant.

    3. Weather-stripping – You’ll want to check the door’s weather-stripping along the sides. If you find that it’s jamming against the sides you can try adjusting it but you may need to have it replaced. For wooden doors that don’t have weather-stripping, make sure they are sealed or painted and you may also want to have them weather-stripped.

If you are consistent you’ll only need to inspect your garage once or twice a year. If you are experiencing any problems with your garage door don’t hesitate to give Guardian Garage Door Services a call at 609-693-8040 to schedule an appointment.

  • Getting Your Garage Ready for Spring

Each year many Americans participate in some form of spring cleaning for their homes, but many of them forget about or neglect their garages. When the weather starts to warm up in the spring and summer it’s only natural to spend more time outdoors. Your garage is a great place to work or even hang out because it provides a combination of being inside and outside at the same time.

The first step to getting your garage ready for spring is making sure it functions properly. Garage door springs are one of the most common parts that require repairs. These springs are under stress every time your garage door operates and eventually they’ll need to be replaced. The best thing you can do is to schedule a garage door inspection from a professional to make sure it’s working properly.

Once your garage door is up to par you can start cleaning out the inside of your garage. You’ll certainly need a broom to clean up the floor and get rid of any cobwebs in the corners. You should open up your garage door while you are cleaning to air the space out. You may want to do a bit of reorganizing including getting out your items for spring and summer and putting away your winter items.

Go through boxes you haven’t opened or used in a long time and determine if you want to sell them, donate them, or throw them away. This is also a great time to reevaluate your garage’s purpose. If you use it to store two vehicles there may not be much you can do with it. However, if you don’t’ store any cars in your garage you can make it into an extra room in your home that serves a specific purpose.

  • How to measure for a new garage door

Is it time for a new garage door? Maybe your old one has seen better days, or maybe you need to winterize your garage with a higher-quality, insulated door. Whatever the reason, the first step in getting a new door is measuring to see exactly which size you need. To do this, you’ll need a measuring tape, a step ladder, something to write with and on and, ideally, an assistant. All measurements should be noted in feet and inches.

    • First, measure the width. Choosing the widest point of your garage, measure between the right and left sides of the finished opening. While you’re doing this, look for any irregularities, like an opening framed with anything other than 2” by 6” wood, or jambs that are not square. This is where a second person comes in very handy because it’s difficult to stretch a tape measure across such a large space on your own.

    • Next, measure the height . This is the distance from the floor to the top of the finished opening, and it can be affected by issues like an un-level floor, so that’s something you’ll want to notice. It’s also good to make sure the top of the finished opening is level.

    • The area beside the openings is the next area to measure. There must be some room on each side so that a vertical track can be installed. The requirement is usually up to 3.75”, but between double garage doors, the center post should be at least 10” wide.

    • You’re almost finished: now it’s time to measure from the top of the door to the ceiling. The distance between the top of the door opening and the ceiling is called the headroom, and it’s where the garage door is going to go when it rolls up on tracks.

    • Last but not least, measure from the garage door opening to the back of the garage. This is an important step, because this area, known as the backroom, is where your garage door will retract when it’s open. You’ll need at least the door’s height plus 15”-18” for a manual door, and more if you’re installing an electric garage door opener.
